MB-OFDM UWB

Abstract

In a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) system, coherent detection requires the transmission of a large number of symbols for channel estimation, thus reducing the bandwidth efficiency. For the first time, this paper proposes unitary differential space-time-frequency codes (DSTFCs) for MB-OFDM UWB communications, which increase the system bandwidth efficiency because no channel state information (CSI) is required. The proposed system would be useful when CSI is unavailable at the receiver, such as when the transmission of multiple channel estimation symbols is impractical or uneconomical. The coding and decoding algorithms for the proposed DSTFCs are then derived for both constant envelope modulation scheme, such as PSK (phase shift keying) and 4QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), and multi-dimensional modulation scheme, such as DCM (dual carrier modulation). The paper also quantifies for the first time the diversity order of a DSTFC MB-OFDM system. Simulation results show that the application of DSTFCs can significantly improve the bit error performance of conventional differential MB-OFDM system (without MIMO), and even provide much better bit error performance than the conventional coherent MBOFDM system (without MIMO) at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract
The paper evaluates the energy level performance of CDMA wireless sensor networks (WSN) with a new error control strategy using BCH coding following hybrid ARQ. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with simple ARQ using CRC and with an existing HARQ-I employing BCH code when applied to CDMA based WSN in terms of energy consumption for successful transmission of fixed length packet. Two kinds of interference namely multiple access interference (MAI) and node interference (NI) are considered. Packet error rate (PER) and energy required for successful delivery of information to a sink considering single hop communication is estimated. The effects of several network parameters such as node density, correlation amongst interferers, power control error (pce) on PER, average number of retransmissions, energy consumption for successful reception of a packet at sink are investigated and energy efficiency in a single hop transmission are estimated and compared for different error control strategies. Analytical results are verified through simulations.
Keywords: HARQ, BCH coding, Wireless CDMA Sensor Network (WCSN), Correlation.

Abstract
Bit errors occur over wireless channels when the signal isn’t strong enough to
overcome the effects of interference and noise. Current wireless protocols may use
forward error correction (FEC) to correct for some (small) number of bit errors,
but generally retransmit the whole packet if the FEC is insufficient. We observe
that current wireless mesh network protocols retransmit a number of packets and
that most of these retransmissions end up sending bits that have already been received
multiple times, wasting network capacity. To overcome this inefficiency, we
develop, implement, and evaluate a partial packet recovery (PPR) system.
PPR incorporates three new ideas: (1) SoftPHY, an expanded physical layer
(PHY) interface to provide hints to the higher layers about how “close” the actual
received symbol was to the one decoded, (2) a postamble scheme to recover data
even when a packet’s preamble is corrupted and not decodable at the receiver,
and (3) PP-ARQ, an asynchronous link-layer retransmission protocol that allows a
receiver to compactly encode and request for retransmission only those portions of
a packet that are likely in error.
Our experimental results from a 27-node 802.15.4 testbed that includes Telos
motes with 2.4 GHz Chipcon radios and GNU Radio nodes implementing the
Zigbee standard (802.15.4) show that PPR increases the frame delivery rate by a
factor of 2× under moderate load, and 7× under heavy load when many links have
marginal quality.
